A youth from Rumbek East County is calling on the government of Lakes State to investigate recent violence incidents in his county, explaining that finding the root causes for violence will help obtain a lasting solution and ensure security.

A violent conflict broke out last Friday between members of Thuyith and Gony Dinka sections, killing a dozen from both sides.

Samuel Mabor Makuek told Good News Radio that Rumbek East was calm but unpredictable, explaining that the each group remains alert and life is not yet normal.

He expressed surprise at the conflict, revealing that there is kinship ties between the two communities and last weekend’s bloodbath was shocking and calls for an investigation.

Mr. Mabor urged the state government to find a lasting solution to the conflict by promoting dialogue between the two groups in conflict.

He added that such a dialogue will have to involve elders and the cattle camp youths who have been the main actors in the conflict and mediated by an arbitrator like in 2002 when the killing of a traditional chief sparkled off a violent conflict.

Mr. Mabor singled out greed and availability of weapons as the main factors behind violence.

He lamented that conflict is diverting the focus of the new nation from development to emergency response.
