The UN has expressed deep regret for the violent death of one of its aid workers in South Sudan.
Pigga Alex Wani, who was working with the World Food Programme for seven years, was killed on Saturday during an attack by armed assailants while travelling on duty near Duk Payuel, Duk County in Jonglei State.UN Humanitarian Coordinator for Sudan Mr. Georg Charpentier said in a note to the press that his loss will be greatly mourned both by his colleagues and the communities that he served.
He also expressed concern about two staff members contracted by the International Organisation for Migration, after their vehicles were seized by the SPLA one week ago and were to carry soldiers into a conflict area of Unity State.
Mr. Charpentier said their location is not known and the humanitarian community is concerned for their safety.
He called on the Government of Southern Sudan, the SPLA and other armed groups to protect the safety of humanitarian personnel at all times and allow them to provide life-saving assistance to communities in need.
