The Governor of Eastern Equatoria on Sunday joined the fundraising drive to finalize the construction of Torit’s largest Catholic church.
Louis Lobong Lojore used the Easter celebration at Our Lady of Assumption Church to mobilize the people and encourage them to contribute generously towards the conclusion of that temple, Emmanuel Radio reported. The governor, who declined to disclose the amount of his contributions, said he has always contributed and would continue till Our Lady’s Church was finished.
Mr. Lobong insisted that the system of contributing for the church construction, called “We are the Church”, should not stop when Our Lady of Assumption was finished but continue rolling over to other parishes.
He stressed that Christians should contribute to build churches in other parishes in the state as well.
Thousands of Christians yesterday turned up for the Easter celebrations at Our Lady of Assumption that some people call the green cathedral of Torit.
Huge crowds attended the three masses in Lotuho, English and Arabic and the faithful lined up in long queues to make their contributions towards the conclusion of the building.
SPLA deputy chief of the general staff for political and moral orientation, Lieutenant General Isaac Mamur, was among the people who offered generously for the constructions works.
The general asked members of the Church construction commission to come to his hotel room and get the money to buy 100 bags of cement.
