Torit prison in Eastern Equatoria is struggling to care for innocent children who are with detained mothers.

Mr. Opwonya Claudio, a social worker at the correctional institution, lamented that children remain in prison because relatives failed to show up to take them home, Emmanuel Radio reported.

He added that some children are in detention because they are juvenile offenders.

Mr. Opwonya said the authorities do not like to have innocent children in detention and fathers should not neglect their children in jail with their wives.

Mr. Opwonya revealed that out of 178 inmates in the prison, both women and men, eight are bellow 18 years of age: five are already serving sentences and three held on remand.

The prison social worker told the press that most of the offenders were detained due to murder related cases while the youths were in either for sexual offenders or theft.
