Civil society groups recommend peaceful mechanisms for demarcating the north-south line and keeping it open at the end of a two-day workshop on soft borders.

Edmond Yakani, Community Empowerment for Progress Organization program coordinator, told the press yesterday in Juba that the civil society groups urged the African Union and the Intergovernmental Agency on Development – IGAD to to ensure a peaceful coexistence between South and North Sudan.

He added that civil society groups in South and North Sudan should engage to make sure that the border between the two countries remains open to allow citizens to cross it.

Mr. Yakani added that the civil societies advocate for both governments in Juba and Khartoum not to arm guerrilla movements at the borders to destabilize the area.

More than six civil society organizations participated in the workshop.

Present were also a GoSS representative from the peace and CPA implementation ministry, UNMIS, IGAD and the secretary of the AU panel on Sudan.
