A local NGO has stepped up efforts to raise enough money to send to school children living in the streets of Juba.

Cathy Nabukwasi, the programme director of Confident Children out of Conflict, told SCR News that there are at least 347 orphans and vulnerable children living in the streets without education and a home.

She added that she is conducting a fundraising campaign to sponsor the schools fees for those children, giving priority to girls.

Ms. Nabukwasi said the NGO works closely with GoSS Ministry of Social Development but the government says it does not have the money to send the street kids to school.

In Juba, most street children came from Eastern Equatorial state after the 2006-2007 attacks of the Ugandan rebels of the Lord’s Resistance Army.

A fourteen year-old explained that most of his street colleagues were repatriated to Torit to resettle with their relatives.

However, many returned to Juba unhappy with the devastating circumstances they met back at home.
