Moboro County authorities in Central Equatoria have decried the illegal growing of tobacco in the area that has become an environmental hazard.
Commissioner Ofeni Ngota said in a public speech during the inauguration of THE new Kimba Payam administration Office last week that County Legislative Councilors were also involved in illegal growing of tobacco at the County, the press secretary said in a note. The commissioner issued an order in August last year outlawing tobacco crops in the county to avoid environmental degradation through the use of chemical fertilizers and deforestation.
Instead, the authorities are promoting the growth of tea and coffee as cash crops to allow the soil to recover from indiscriminate usage of nitrates.
The law says that any person deliberately growing, buying or selling tobacco at the County will be prosecuted and sentenceD to six months in prison.
