A nun urged the communities in Lakes State to plant strong trees that can act as wind breakers.
Sister Beatrice Arinaitwe, who is the Principle of Comboni Primary school in Yirol, made this appeal after a devastating storm blew off the roof of all classrooms at the school on April 3, closing the establishment for about two weeks now.She told Good News Radio that such destructive storm could only be controlled by strong trees that can act as wind breakers.
Sr. Arinaitwe added that trees offer other benefits like controlling soil erosion, and are a source of fuel, oxygen, timber and other construction materials besides providing shelter.
Fr. Joseph Parlade, Yirol parish priest, told SCR News over the phone that the strong winds destroyed all the iron-sheet roofs in the school compound including 17 classrooms, four offices and two stores. The grass covers of 15 teachers’ houses, four classrooms and the kitchen were also blown away.
