The number of displaced people by local violence has doubled in South Sudan in March getting close to 100 thousand and it worries the UN.

Lise Grande, the UN deputy humanitarian regional coordinator, told reporters today in Juba that the approximately 150 incidents of armed conflicts have displaced almost 100 thousand people and left them in an overwhelming need of humanitarian assistance.

She mentioned that the huge number of displaced has obstructed the recovery and transition programme of the soon to be independent state.

Ms. Grande said the number of displaced people will increase if the security situation deteriorates.

She added the UN is worried about these developments.

The UN estimates that more than 800 people have been killed in clashes since January.

Inter-tribal conflicts could serve as a distraction to the transition period since there seems to be a deliberate targeting on civilians, in particular women and children.

Some analysts say warlords use violence in a bid to better their changes to share power in the new country’s arrangements and the conflicts will go away after July 9.
