The US Consul-General in Juba has called on the Government of Southern Sudan to create an environment conducive for foreign investors. Ambassador Barrie Walkley said that corruption and lack of transparency makes investment difficult in the region, SRS reported.

Mr. Walkley affirmed that official duties have to be transparent and corruption cut to absolute minimum if southern Sudan wants to attract investors. Mr. Walkley mentioned that it’s not enough to say that southern Sudan is open for business but the government of the south should open itself and show what the benefits are for investors to go into southern Sudan and invest.

The GOSS Minister of Commerce and Industry, Stephen Dhiew however, blames the federal government of disseminating negative information about southern Sudan to discourage foreign investors. He noted that the security situation in southern Sudan has dramatically improved with local and foreign investors increasing. He said the Khartoum government wants southern Sudan to be the market for their products by invading southern Sudan as a consuming market where they produce and sell their products to southern Sudan.”
