GOSS Ministry of health yesterday announced that it now has a ward for surgical operation on obstetric Fistula. Obstetric fistula is a hole in the birth canal caused by prolonged labor without prompt medical intervention.

The woman is left with leaking urine or fasces sometimes both and in most cases, a dead baby. Addressing the press yesterday in Juba, GOSS minister of health Dr. Luka Tombekana Monoja said his ministry established a center in Rumbek for surgical operation of women suffering from the disease in collaboration with the United Nations population Fund (UNFPA) Dr. Monoja revealed that most women in the past suffered in southern Sudan due to lack of personnel that could carry out the operation.

He mentioned that a campaign to sensitize the public to report for treatment is taking place in Rumbek Hospital in Lakes state. He advised women suffering from the disease to avail themselves to be treated in Rumbek hospital. Fistula is common in poor communities in sub-Saharan Africa and Asia where access to or use of obstetric care is limited.
