President Omar Al-Bashir announced that the government’s campaign for the promotion of Sudan’s unity would be launched in southern Sudan soon.
Southerners are due to go to the polls in January 2011 to decide whether to remain united with the north or secede to form the world’s newest nation. While delivering a speech during the annual Ramadan breakfast of the Coptic community in Khartoum yesterday, Al-Bashir pledged to provide the campaign with all resources to enlighten southern citizens on advantages of unity and disadvantages of secession, Sudan Tribune website reported.
He urged the Government of Southern Sudan to ensure fair and free conduct of the referendum and to enable southern citizens to cast their votes with freedom and transparency.
In a press statement published yesterday by SUNA, the country’s official news agency, the SPLM’s leading member Luka Biong said that the law allows political parties and civil society organizations to contribute by sending messages to southern citizens and inform them to cast their vote in the referendum depending on accurate information.
