The process of Abyei referendum has been obstructed by the National Congress Party, NCP, which did not accept one of the candidates nominated by SPLM to be a part of the Abyei Referendum Commission.

Addressing the press on August 13 2010, upon his arrival from Khartoum, SPLM Secretary General and GoSS Minister for Peace and CPA Implementation, Pagan Amun, said the situation in Abyei is grave and the discussions between NCP and SPLM have reached a deadlock. He added that there might be a plan to create ethnic cleansing, which will negatively affect the Dinka Ngok.

Mr. Amum called upon the international community, IGAD, UN and all partners that guaranteed the Comprehensive Peace Agreement CPA to intervene and resolve the deadlock.

The CPA gives the people of Abyei a right to vote in a referendum and choose to become a part of South Sudan or to remain in Southern Kordofan.
