The public in Juba town described south Sudan Martyrs’ day as a day of coming together to share the sufferings and the lives of the fallen heroes and heroines.

The 30th of July 2005 is when the first GoSS president John Garang passed away in a plane crash coming from Uganda to Juba.
GoSS President Salva Kiir Mayardit declared this day a memorial of all south Sudanese who lost their lives during the liberation period.
During the occasion T-Shirt, caps and banners bearing words like “the last walk to freedom, our martyrs our freedom and our heroes and heroines did not go in vain” were distributed to participants.

Morris Piya Emmanuel told SCR News that the death of the freedom fighters enabled him to share with others and express his views.
Akoul Chagai Atem said she was happy since it was a big day for all southern Sudanese to share their cultural diversity.
Mr. Piya said that the day cannot be forgotten since south Sudanese have gained the freedom to express themselves freely without intimidation and urged south Sudanese to learn from the day and focus ahead to foresee their future.

Such an occasion is viewed as a reminder to Southern Sudanese of their inhumane past.
