State and GoSS ministers of Co-operatives and Rural Development consulted partners on elaborating new rural development policies and strategies in a one-day meeting in Juba today.

The meeting is a preparatory one, which will establish a forum that promotes communication between the ministries and partners.

Addressing the participants, the state minister of Cooperatives and Rural Development in Central Equatoria state, Michael Tongun, said that over ninety percent of the populationis in the rural areas, and a great effort lies in providing services for the people in rural areas.
He called upon partners to organize themsleves into an entity that will coordinate with the ministries of Co-operatives and Rural Development, to make the vision of “taking towns to people” into a reality.

GoSS minister of Co-operatives and Rural Development, Dr. Anne Itto, said GoSS most important commitment is rural transformation. She said rural transformation was one of the reasons SPLM struggled for years in order to improve the quality of life in southern Sudanese.

Dr. Anne Itto affirmed that rural transformation is a shared responsibility of government, citizens, NGOs and other stake holders.
