The Sudanese Network for Democratic Elections has called on the African Union to intervene in the persistent ethnic conflicts that have claimed many lives in South Sudan.

The coordinator of the Juba-based organization Edmund Yakani said that “the AU is not doing much to address the conflict that could threaten the security of many countries in the east African region, all Africa website reported.

Mr. Yakan noted that if AU doesn’t get more involved and violence breaks out during the referendum, the region will pay a high price.
He also mentioned that the LRA conflict is not over which is likely to make Sudanese refugees again.

Mr. Yakani said the AU must send in observers well ahead of the referendum to monitor the situation adding that Sudan needs a quicker response from the AU.
