The Apostolic Papal Nuncio to the Sudan Leo Boccardi said the Catholic Church in Sudan has the duty to create and prepare human resource for the country.

Speaking at the opening of the Plenary of the Sudan Catholic Bishops’ Conference (SCBC) in Juba yesterday, Bishop Boccardi said the Church has a big role in creating and preparing able lay leaders as the new elites of Sudan.

Archbishop Boccardi asked the SCBC to sustain the Catholic University of Sudan as a tool of creating able human resource for the society.
He affirmed that the Catholic Church has been active in educating the society but has not been adequately present in the context of culture. He urged the Catholic Church to fill this vacuum and also to engage in the dialogue with Islam with competence and conviction.
Archbishop Boccardi explained that the Pope acknowledges that the next six months are crucial for Sudan and that the Referendum must involve the participation of every citizen in the country.

He made these remarks on the first day of the SCBC plenary annual meeting, which is due to tackle the involvement of Catholic Church of Sudan in the forthcoming Referendum
