The talks in Doha, Qatar involve the government and the Darfur anti-government group, the Liberation Movement for Justice.
Hassan al-Turabi the leader of the popular congress party described the talks in Doha a show between the Khartoum government and a faction not present in Darfur.
Dr. Turabi said a peace agreement could be reached in Darfur if the government negotiated the main movement as was the case of southern Sudan.
In May the main Darfur Justice and Equality Movement JEM suspended talks with the government claiming that the government violated the ceasefire agreement signed between the two parties in February 2010.
Rabbie Abdullaati, a senior member of the National Congress Party NCP claimed that despite efforts exerted by the government, JEM refused to come to negotiation table.
Dr. Turabi is constantly accused by the government of having strong links with the JEM. The government also describes JEM as the “military wing” of his party.
