The traffic police in Rumbek town have initiated a vehicle crackdown targeting motorbikes and vehicle without registration numbers. Chol Arol Kelueljang is the Traffic Police Director in Lakes state.
He told Good News Radio yesterday that the traffic police will arrest drivers operating vehicles and motorcycles without registration numbers. He urged motorists to have their vehicles registered otherwise they risk being arrested.

Mr. Chol explained that it is against the law to operate with an unregistered vehicle or motorbike, adding that the registration number helps identify the owner of the vehicle in case of an accident.

Giving the example of boda boda riders, the traffic police director clarified that he gave the order for the crackdown following repeated incidents of motorists, usually “kids”, causing accidents and running away.

Mr. Chol also said that some kids riding motorbikes as “boda boda” are underage, ranging between 10 to 17 years.

He further said that attempts to arrest and detain these underage motorists have been criticized by Human Rights groups who have sought with success for the release of the detained young motorists.

It costs One Thousand Two Hundred and Sixty Sudanese Pounds (equivalent of about Five Hundred US Dollars) to register a vehicle in Lakes State, while motorbike registration costs One Hundred Sudanese Pounds only.
