FRESH FIGHTING KILLS 50 IN DARFUR

Fresh clashes between government troops and rebels killed 50 people and wounded more than 100 in Darfur.

Army spokesman Sawarmi Khaled Saad said government forces attacked the Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) positions in Uzban, southeast of El Fasher.

Mr. Saad said 43 rebels were killed and 90 wounded, while seven SAF soldiers died and 11 were wounded.

JEM spokesman Ali al-Wafi told AFP by phone that there was a battle that resulted in numerous casualties, but not sure of the dead and wounded.

Officials of the joint UN-African Union peacekeeping mission UNAMID were unable to provide any details.
