Domestic civic educators started preparing young people from the ten states of South Sudan to choose wisely in the 2011 referendum.

Over 50 youngsters attended a workshop under the theme “My referendum for freedom, bridging the Gap.”

The attendants included youth representatives from the ten states of south Sudan, university students, and community based organizations.

Pax Christi coordinator for Eastern Equatoria, Andrea Minalla, told SCR News at the workshop today in Juba that the new generation was on the dark about the historical conflicts between the North and South.

Mr. Minalla explained that voter education was important to empower and enlighten the youth in order to make prudent decisions in the referendum.

Mr. Minalla added that parents and the elderly were obliged to share the history of the country with the youth.

He added that this was one way of bridging the generation gap and bringing about dialogue and strengthening families

The history of Sudan remains a fundamental challenge to the young people in the South.

The one-day workshop aimed to enlighten the young participants on historical conflicts that inflicted pain and suffering to the people of Sudan.
