Two Darfur rebel leaders appeared before the International Criminal Court yesterday charged with masterminding an attack that killed 12 African Union peacekeepers in Darfur in 2007.

Abdallah Banda Abakaer Nourain and Saleh Mohammed Jerbo Jamus described themselves as revolutionaries and welcomed the chance to clear their names at the Hague tribunal, in Holland.

They urged other war crimes suspects, including President Hassan Omar al-Bashir, to do the same.

Mr. Banda told the three-judge panel that he went to the ICC on his own will in response to the summons.

Mr. Jerbo said his team was in the ICC to achieve justice and called on everyone wanted for justice to appear before the international court.
