The South Sudan army said it expected to capture very soon an insurgent commander who rebelled after he lost the race for Jonglei governor.

SPLA spokesperson Major General Kuol Deim Kuol told Reuters that their soldiers attacked George Athor’s hideout in Wunlam village, Khorfulus County, on Monday night, after receiving information from one of his men captured in an earlier raid.

Mr. Deim said Mr. Athor was on the run with less than 30 soldiers.

He added that the SPLA was pursuing the commander and he should be captured within days.

In the attack, the SPLA claimed to have captured 13 of Mr. Athor’s men and his radio equipment.

Earlier the SPLA said Mr. Athor ran into the forest with some 130 soldiers and a number of civilians on April 30 after attacking a military base near Malakal.
