Rumbek kids are calling upon different organisms involved in the upbringing of infants to join them to celebrate African Child Day on Wednesday.

Martha Awal, a pupil at Rumbek Girls Primary School, in a statement recorded at Good News Radio, called upon fellow children, parents, teachers, members of international organizations, and government officials to turn up at the celebration of the African Child.

Martha explained that the Day of the African Child recalled the shooting of protesting children 34 years ago in Soweto, South Africa.

The children were marching to protest against the discriminatory education system in South Africa.

Martha also revealed that the theme of this year’s celebration is “Child Budgeting”, adding that children would like the government and the parliament to have a budget for the education, protection, health and the general development of children.

Martha appealed to parents to provide basic human needs to children, including food, clothing and adequate shelter, that can enhance healthy living.

She mentioned some difficulties school-going children experienced like lack of teachers, insufficient learning material and lack of classrooms, early marriages, and inability to pay school fees.

The event of the Celebration of the Day of the African Child in Lakes State is being organized by Save the Children.

The planned activities include group discussions among children about issues of their concern, live radio programs featuring children in dialogue with relevant government officials and parents, posters bearing messages from children, and processions by children among others.
