The President of the Republic will not be among the 20 African heads of state at the opening ceremony of the World Cup in South Africa.

World Cup International relations director general Ayanda Ntsaluba said Omar Hassan al-Bashir would not be joining African leaders like Zimbabwe’s Robert Mugabe to witness the start of the first World Cup hosted in the continent this afternoon.

Mr. Ntsaluba added that Mr. al-Bashir was invited to the World Cup opening ceremony, but the president indicated that he would not be present.

The International Criminal Court issued a arrest warrant for Mr.al-Bashir on charges of crimes against humanity in Darfur.

South Africa as a signatory of the ICC treaty would have to arrest the Sudanese president and hand him over to the international court.

This was what President Jamcob Zuma of South Africa told MPs when they asked him what he would do if Mr. al-Bashir showed up for the games.
