Sudan’s central bank chief said that the north must diversify its economy before the south chooses next year between independence and unity.

Governor Sabir Hassan noted that if southern Sudan secedes, it could affect the economy negatively unless the government takes measures to counter it, Bloomberg reported.

Mr. Hassan made the remarks during a lecture in Khartoum.

He urged the government to focus on agricultural development and direct government spending as soon as possible.
