Uganda said the Sudanese President was invited to attend the African summit in Kampala in July after its president commented that Mr. al-Bashir would not be invited.
A statement from the Ugandan foreign affairs ministry said the Sudanese embassy in Kampala confirmed that it received and sent the invitation letter dated March 17 to Khartoum. The statement read that president Omar Hassan al-Bashir was invited for the African Union Summit scheduled for Kampala from July 19 to 29, 2010.
The ministry said all African heads of state were invited, except those suspended from the AU for specific reasons like Niger and Guinea over military coups.
Khartoum on Sunday demanded an apology from Uganda over a statement from the State House that quoted President Yoweri Museveni as saying that Mr. al-Bashir was not invited for the African summit.
Mr. al-Bashir also demanded the summit to be moved to another venue noting that Mr. Museveni’s statement showed Kampala’s ill intentions towards Khartoum.
