Seven child organizations prepared a study that collected accurate and comprehensive data in order to enable education partners to lobby the government to abolish school levies.
Save the Children, War Child and the Dutch embassy in Sudan were among the organizations that prepared the study.Daddy Obwari, Save the Children Education Project Manager, told SCR News that school levies, including fees and scholastic material, contribute to the high rate of school dropouts in south Sudan.
Mr. Obwari added that school levies range from 50 to 150 Sudanese pounds each term, prices he described unaffordable for most parents.
He noted that the government was urged to use some of the revenue collected to run the schools and leave out levies and other forms of hidden costs that were keeping many children out of school and causing pupils to dropout.
The study was carried out in Central Equatoria, Upper Nile and Lakes states.
