The South African president said it would arrest his Sudanese counterpart if he visited South Africa, stating its commitment to the international laws it ratified.

MPs asked President Jacob Zuma whether Omar Hassan al-Bashir would be arrested if he went to South Africa for the 2010 World Cup.

Mr. Zuma said South Africa would respect the international law and arrest Mr. al-Bashir.

He noted that as a signatory to the conventions setting up the International Criminal Court (ICC), South Africa was legally bound to arrest Mr. al-Bashir if he came to the country.
