A village in Lakes State starts tomorrow its own tournament putting together various activities in synchrony with the 2010 World Cup that kicks off in South Africa a week from today.

The initiative “Mapuordit World Cup √ɬê Justice, Peace and Reconciliation must prevail” aims at bringing together the residents of Mapuordit, Lakes State, focusing on the important values of peace, justice and reconciliation as the foundation for a common and enriching living among different nations and tribes.

Fr. Daniele Moschetti, a Comboni Missionary, is the head of the team coordinating this initiative. He told Good News Radio that the initiative begins with a workshop on Justice and Peace on Saturday, followed by 20 talks focusing on justice, peace, reconciliation, HIV and AIDS and ecology amidst various sports.

Fr. Moschetti said that groups of five pupils each were studying about the 32 nations present at the World Cup to take part in the Mapuordit World Cup of Knowledge, a quiz with winners passing on to the next round and then proceeding on to the finals.

Fr. Moschetti explained that the initiative would bring together various groups of people, including children, men, women, and the elderly, to take the global event of the World Cup to the village of Mapuordit.

The community will watch the World Cup matches thanks to the DStv system provided by the Healing of the Healers department of the Sudan Catholic Bishops’ Conference with the support of UNICEF.

“Mapuordit World Cup” will end on July 11 at the same time as the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, with football matches that will also involve women teams.
