High levels of poverty in Lakes state are derailing activities the Catholic Church organized to promote women in the Diocese of Rumbek.

Mary Mumu, Women Desk coordinator of Rumbek diocese, told SCR News that women were too poor to support themselves and put together some funds for their activities.

Sr. Mary explained that her congregation supported women’s activities to establish income generating projects in the diocese.

She lamented that domestic commitments did not allow women to engage fully in the projects started by the department.

Sr. Mary explained that women were breadwinners and spent much time looking for food and bringing it to the cattle camps far away from home.

The income generating activities run Rumbek Women Desk include tailoring, microfinance businesses, and handcraft among others.
