A Sudan Aid official said the referendum might affect vital assistance the organization offered to the people in Darfur.

Gabriel Yaid, Executive Secretary of Sudan Aid, told SCR News said the Catholic charity is involved in education, health, emergency responses and peace building in Darfur.

Mr. Yai explained that many staffs operating in Darfur are southern Sudanese.

He said he feared that some might come home to participate in the referendum and not return to Darfur permanently.

Mr. Yai explained that it would difficult to replace the present staff by locals to run health projects since the region lacked qualified people.

The schools are already in the hands of the local government.

Mr. Yai said Sudan Aid built some five permanent schools and seven clinics in Darfur.

He added that the schools were administered by the government with Sudan Aid support.

Sudan Aid is the Caritas branch in the Sudanese dioceses.
