The UN World Food Programme (WFP) planned to provide assistance to at least 2.6 million people to address the food insecurity problem in south Sudan.

South Sudan is greatly affected by food shortages due to delayed rains, a prolonged drought and internal insecurity.

The UN relief chief, John Holmes, told the press on Saturday in Juba that much of WFP’s effort would focus on nutritional needs of the most vulnerable children.

Mr. Holmes explained that six emergency pipelines have been put in place to ensure enough supply of food before the end of the rainy season.

Mr. Holes added that the increasing level of violence is contributing to the food shortages because it disrupted agricultural production.
