The very large number of civilians with weapons in South Sudan is making tribal conflicts more deadly.

This is the assessment of John Holmes, UN Undersecretary for Humanitarian Affairs and Emergency Relief Coordinator, who is visiting the country.

Mr. Holmes told the press yesterday in Juba that conflict over resources like water and pastures also contributed to tribal clashes.

Mr. Holmes added that provision of water should help control tribal conflicts together with more efforts to reconcile rival clans and tribes.

Mr. Holmes was speaking to the press yesterday after his tour to Warrap and Western Bahr el Ghazal states that were greatly affected by the tribal clashes.
