An inmate of Torit County Prisons died in the local hospital after a two-week illness.
Eastern Equatoria state Director of prisons, William Deng Garang, told Emmanuel Radio that Marko Lotabu succumbed to death yesterday at Torit Civil Hospital, due to a combination of malaria and diarrhoea.Mr. Garang informed that Mr. Lotabu was convicted last year for murder.
He said the 38-year old inmate from Kapoeta County was sentenced to 10 years behind the bars for hacking a man to death with a machete during a cattle raid.
The death of Mr. Lotabu at Torit prison does not come as a surprise since the correctional facility is overcrowded and putting the lives of the inmates at risk.
Torit Civil Hospital, where patients including inmates seek treatment, is also under supplied and hit by poor staffing.
