Detained journalists from South Sudan TV and Radio are undergoing harsh treatment at the hands of the National Security.

The alert comes from David Dau, executive director of the Agency of Independent Media (AIM).

On May 19, journalists from SS TV and Radio went on strike demanding housing allowances for 2009.

Two days later, the National Security detained twelve journalists.

Mr. Dau told the press today in Juba that three female journalists were released while nine others are still in detention one week later.

He affirmed that the three who were released reported cases of harassment, intimidation, threat and humiliation.

Mr. Dau added that the others are considered ring-leaders.

Mr. Dau stressed that the safety of journalist in south Sudan is worsening as the region heads to the referendum.

Mr. Dau appealed to all government officials to understand the role of the media and respect the freedom of the press, the right to access information and freedom of expression.

He urged all journalists to be guided by the ethics and code of conduct of professional journalism.
