Heavy cultivation taking place at the Imatong forests, in Eastern Equatoria, is affecting the region by exposing the area to natural calamities like soil erosion due to the heavy felling of trees.

Paul Peter Awol is the project manager of the Wildlife Conservation Society. He told SCR News that cultivation is endangering rare vegetation types and affecting riverbeds and streams.

Mr. Awol said no intervention was made so far on farmers because the area was inaccessible.

Mr. Awol added that the GoSS and state ministries of wildlife, agriculture and forestry are collaborating to control the cultivators who have invaded the Imatong forests and river banks.
