The head of African Union said South Sudan’s vote for independence in the referendum for self-determination would be a major problem.

Jean Ping made this statement while celebrating Africa Day at Ouagadougou, the capital of Burkina Faso, yesterday.

Mr. Ping said he always favoured the option to make Sudan’s unity attractive.

He added that South Sudan’s choice of independence would be a major problem for all African countries which could be confronted by similar situations.

Mr. Ping said it is likely that voters in South Sudan will support independence and such a choice can lead to a number of major difficulties, including war.

He concluded that the AU has no choice but respect the decision of south Sudanese.
