The UN evacuated ten aid workers from a remote Jonglei area for fear that the situation created by a defeated candidate who took up arms could affect their safety.

Matt Persson, head of the World Food Programme office in Jonglei state, told Reuters that the security situation was getting worse with reports of mobilization of soldiers and that the population was moving out of the town.

Mr. Persson said 11 thousand were not getting distributed food in Pibor, Jonglei, where the fighting took place.

He added that if the crisis is not solved some 62 thousand people may be affected in June.

David Yauyau, leader of the armed group which clashed with the SPLM on Thursday, had run for parliament for the opposition United Democratic Front party but lost.
