STIGMA HINDERS GENDER VIOLENCE REPORTING

Many cases of gender based violence are not reported to the police by the victims due to the social and family stigma tied to it.

Yei Gender Base Police officer Woyi Wilson told Easter News yesterday said that his office have registered only 68 cases of gender base violence from the beginning of this year.

Mr. Woyi stressed that there many victims of gender violence.

Mr. Woyi said that his office gives directives to victims on how to go about their cases.

He added that cases that need counselling other than court are referred to the responsible entities.

Bakhita Josephine is the secretary of Yei County Women Association. She said cases of gender based violence can be reduced by non violent attitudes.

Miss Josephine added that women should learn to understand the emotions of their husbands and find positive ways to deal with gender based related issues.
