The Yei Police yesterday failed to arrest the parish priest of the Catholic cathedral on a legal technicality due to lack of a key document.

Fr. Joseph Arike, the director of Easter Radio, told SCR News over the phone that contrary to what we reported, yesterday the police tried to arrest Fr. Tom Poru, but failed because the officers were unable to produce a valid arrest warrant.

Yei County Commissioner David Lokonga Moses confirmed to Bishop Erkolano Lodu Tombe that he asked the police to arrest Fr. Poru because the priest challenged his authority.

The Commissioner wants to build a Guest House and some houses in a piece of land given to the diocese of Yei by former Acting Executive Director Augustino Ali Liwaya in 1997.

Bishop Erkolano told the commissioner the diocese plans to build an extension of Bakhita Clinic with a maternity and a secondary school in the piece of land and it is ready to pay for the leasing.

Commissioner Lokonga insisted that the donation of land was illegal and his office does not recognize the papers the diocese possesses.
