KIIR PUTS AGRICULTURE FIRST

The first elected GoSS President put agriculture on the top of a list of 13 priorities for his new government that will include opposition members.

Salva Kiir Mayardit set in his inauguration speech 13 cardinal goals and essential principles for his new government, including agriculture, education, health, peace and security, reconciliation and war veterans.

Mr. Kiir promised a rural transformation by allocating part of the oil dividends into agriculture.

Mr. Kiir recognized that during the past five years the achievements on agriculture were minimal.

In the field of health, Mr. Kiir repeated his commitment to curb maternal and child mortality rates in Southern Sudan, among the highest in the world.

He added that it is a shame.

Mr. Kiir announced that GoSS Ministry of SPLA Affairs will take also care of Veterans Affairs.

He repeated his commitment to disarmament saying that so far the SPLA collected over 22 thousand illegal weapons from civilians.

Mr. Kiir announced that he intends to raise to 30 percent the participation of women in politics, saying he wants more ladies in senior executive positions as presidential advisors, minsters, heads of mission, undersecretaries and director generals.

Mr. Kiir said the referenda for self-determination in South Sudan and Abyei have to take place on January 9, 2011, and urged the NCP to collaborate to put in place all necessary means and end the demarcation of the North-South border.
