GoSS Minister for Information and Broadcasting minister reprimanded the UN radio in Sudan and said he had authority to close it down.
Minister Paul Mayom condemned Miraya’s transmission of an interview with renegade commander George Athor calling it an incitement to violence.Mr. Mayom told Reuters that he asked the UN to investigate why its Miraya FM station aired the interview with Mr. Athor.
He explained that a dissident officer on principle should not be allowed to talk over the radio.
Mr. Mayom said Miraya went beyond its mandate by running the piece and risked spreading panic by broadcasting Mr. Athor’s threats to launch attacks in Jonglei.
The UN said the minister had brought up his concerns in a meeting with senior officers.
U.N. spokesman Kouider Zerrouk defended the interview and the broader coverage of Miraya, set up after the peace deal in partnership with a Swiss aid group to promote democracy in the region.
