An educationist working at t a Vocational Training Institute said practical skills are essential for Southern Sudan to achieve autonomy and self-sufficiency in terms of human resources.
Paolo Gallina is an Italian teacher that integrated the team managing Ireneo Dud Vocational Training Centre at Barghel, in Cueibet County, some 60 kilometres West of Rumbek town.Dr. Gallina told Good News Radio that the dream of the Vocational School is to give skills to students on practical things.
He added that skills in masonry, carpentry and metal work are very important if Southern Sudan has to be rebuilt.
Dr. Gallina said that he was concerned about the negative attitude among many students in Lakes State with regard to work that involves practical skills.
Dr. Gallina explained that the negative attitude towards menial jobs has its origins in the community that tends to underrate those involved in what is commonly known as blue collar jobs.
He urged the Christian community and the public at large to encourage the youth to be proud of acquiring and making use of practical skills.
Southern Sudan relies heavily on expatriates from neighbouring countries for infrastructural development works.
Ireneo Dud Vocational Training Centre offers training in masonry.
It plans to start courses in carpentry and metal works.
The training centre belongs to the Catholic Diocese of Rumbek.
