The opposing leader Hassan al Turabi was arrested late on Saturday in Khartoum for insulting the government through the press.

This is the justification a top NCP official gave to the press for Mr. al-Turabi’s arrest.

Rabie Abdulatti Obeid said the leader of the Popular Congress Party was arrested for calling for instability against the legal government through his newspaper.

Mr. Obeid said that al-Turabi’s newspaper tried to provoke the armed forces, especially the Justice and Equality Movement, to violate the agreement they signed in February with the Sudan government.

He added that al-Turabi also falsely accused the government of sponsoring terrorism.
