The SPLM presented today five areas of priority for the new government of Southern Sudan (GoSS) that include the referendum, good governance, security, agriculture and social services.
The priority sectors were chosen during a three-day leadership policy conference called by the SPLM chairman Salva Kiir Mayardit.SPLM Secretary General, Pagan Amum, met this morning with the press in Juba to present the policies laid by the conference for the new government to enact.
Mr. Amum said that priority number one was the preparation and carrying out of the referenda on South Sudan and Abyei self-determination.
Mr. Amum said GoSS is to start preparation for the referendum in terms of civic education and setting up all necessary arrangements for the commissions to function.
The SPLM Secretary General presented the building of good governance as the second priority.
He added the parliament and the Anti Corruption Commission have a special role in controlling government expenses.
Mr. Amum said the strengthening of the Auditor’s Chambers is part of this policy to fight corruption.
The third priority is security through a modernised SPLA, developed police force and reconciliation conferences to stop inter-tribal conflicts.
The SPLM wants to switch from oil to agricultural based economy. The money to invest in traditional and industrial agriculture should come from cuts in government expenses and a slim down executive.
Finally, the SPLM wants GoSS to provide social services like water, health and education though increased revenue collection.
