A church leader said civic education towards the referendum should start immediately to avoid the shortcomings that marred the elections process.

Fr. Andrew Madrama runs the Justice and Peace Office in the diocese of Torit. He told SCR News that people have to know what a Yes or No to independence means before they take part in the referendum.

Fr. Andrew said the Church prepares for the referendum using its own structures.

He added that the Church does not take sides: it encourages people to exercise their moral right and take part in the popular consultation.

Fr. Andrew concluded that the referendum due until January 9, 2011, is a defining factor for the Sudanese people to look critically to their dignity and destiny.

Fr. Andrew made these statements at the end of a two-day workshop organized by the Catholic Relief Services for Justice and Peace officials in the Sudan to start planning the Church’s participation in the referendum under the theme “Let my people choose.”
