Khartoum has announced yesterday that it would not sign the framework agreement aimed at redistributing Nile water shares, brokered by several up-stream countries.
Nile waters use is regulated by colonial agreements signed in 1929 and 1959 that give Sudan and Egypt the lion’s share of river flow.The two countries had also the power to veto Nile river projects in up-stream countries.
Ethiopia, Tanzania, Uganda, Kenya and DR Congo dismissed the colonial treaties as unfair.
They agreed on a new water-sharing scheme called Nile Basin Initiative that allows them to use of Nile for more irrigation and power projects.
Egypt and Sudan did not sign the new water sharing pact over fears that it would affect the river flow and its use of Nile waters for electricity and food production.
