The head of the United Nations-African Union peacekeeping mission in Darfur expressed outrage for the killing of two Egyptian blue helmets in an ambush yesterday.
UNAMID chief, Ibrahim Gambari, said the ambush by unknown gunmen to a military convoy that killed two peacekeepers and wounded another three was a coward attack.Yesterday, at about 11.30 AM, gunmen attacked three UNAMID vehicles on a routine patrol with 20 officers from the Egyptian contingent near Katila village, 85 kilometres south of Edd al Fursan, in South Darfur.
Mr. Gambari added that UNAMID remains firm in its commitment to carrying out its mandate in the service of peace in Darfur.
The mission called upon the Government of the Sudan to identify, capture and bring the perpetrators to justice.
This attack brings to 24 the number of UNAMID personnel killed in hostile actions since January 2008 when the joint mission started.
