Lakes State authorities celebrated belated Tuberculosis World Day today with the inauguration of a HIV clinic, a TB Microscopy lab and TB tests for all interested to know their status.
The celebration was organized by Malteser International in partnership with the Ministry of Health Lakes State.
Dr. Geoffrey Wandira is Malteser’s Health Program Manager, responsible for TB-HIV and Leprosy Control Programs in Lakes State.
He told Good News Radio that the objective of World Tuberculosis Day celebration was to bring awareness to the community about the disease that is number one killer in South Sudan.
He added that the celebration recognised people who received treatment and spoke about their experience to encourage other patients.
Dr. Wandira said TB is curable and treatment is free of charge.
Malteser’s TB and HIV programs are sponsored by Global Fund and ECHO.
SCR News tried to get concrete information about TB in South Sudan from the World Health Organization but the official in charge said they are preparing a message to be distributed across the region.
